Textured Stone Wall

The design challenge

Reveal the texture and geological character of the stone by lighting parallel to the surface — the opposite of the smooth-wall problem.

Why this works

  • 01A linear grazer 100–200 mm from the wall face casts light at a raking angle; every relief casts a micro-shadow, and the surface reads as sculpture rather than as colour.
  • 02Warm 2700 K matches the natural pigment of most stone and avoids the cool cast that flattens material.
  • 03The technique works from the ceiling downward or from the floor upward — direction is a design choice.

Common mistakes

  • ×Wall-washing textured stone — kills the texture completely; the wall reads as flat colour.
  • ×Mounting too far off the wall (>300 mm) — the raking angle softens and shadows disappear.
  • ×Cool colour temperatures on warm stone — the material looks grey and cold.
