Case Study 08
Landscape Lighting
A hierarchy of path lighting, planting accents, tree uplights and water features across an exterior scheme.
The design challenge
Guide the visitor through the landscape at night without a runway of visible fixtures — every light should reveal something worth looking at.

Why this works
- 01Low-mounted step lights and bollards throw light onto the ground, not into the eye. The path becomes visible without visible sources.
- 02Planting and specimen trees receive the accent lighting; the path itself receives the by-product.
- 03Warm 2700 K keeps foliage natural and reads as candlelight rather than sportsfield.
Common mistakes
- ×Bollards evenly spaced along the path — reads as engineering, not landscape.
- ×Cool white on foliage — grey, dead, aquarium-like.
- ×Over-lighting water — a pool of light instead of the ripple.
Technical reference
Values are educational reference points, not specification. Every project requires site-specific analysis and product photometric data.
Luxitecture recommendation
Design the landscape at night as a sequence of destinations — a tree, a wall, a bench, a water feature — each accented. The path lights only exist to safely connect them, and should never be the loudest voice.
