The design challenge

Reveal the wall's colour and material honestly, edge to edge, with no visible scallops, no hot line at the top, and no dark base.

Why this works

  • 01A dedicated wall-washer optic 700 mm off the wall projects an asymmetric distribution that reaches the base as strongly as the top.
  • 02Even fixture spacing (typically wall-offset ≈ fixture spacing) creates overlapping fields with no visible boundaries.
  • 033000 K flatters most architectural surfaces — plaster stays warm, timber stays timber, marble keeps depth.

Common mistakes

  • ×Using a downlight instead of a wall-washer — leaves a hot arc near the ceiling and darkness below waist height.
  • ×Placing fixtures too close to the wall (<400 mm) — scallops become visible even with a wash optic.
  • ×Mixing colour temperatures — the wall reads patchy instead of continuous.

Luxitecture recommendation

Prefer purpose-built wall-washers with asymmetric reflectors. Keep the aperture line clean and continuous — a plaster-in linear detail reads best on a monolithic wall. Never mix wash and downlight optics on the same feature plane.
