The design challenge

Reveal the building's architectural intent at night — its rhythm, its material, its edges — without light pollution and without turning the neighbours' bedrooms into daylight.

Why this works

  • 01Ground-recessed asymmetric uplights 300–500 mm off the base wash the elevation top to bottom with a single strong distribution.
  • 02Warm 2700–3000 K keeps stone and render looking natural against the night sky.
  • 03Grazing distances (<150 mm) reveal texture; washing distances (>400 mm) reveal form. Pick the intent first.

Common mistakes

  • ×Aiming uplights past the roof line — the light escapes to the sky and you pay for what you cannot see.
  • ×Symmetrical downward floods on tall façades — a bright band at the base, nothing above.
  • ×Cool colour temperatures on warm masonry — the building looks foreign and cold.
