The design challenge
Create intimacy over the table without glare into diners' eyes, and keep the surrounding room recessed so the table becomes the focus.

Why this works
- 01A pendant hung 700–800 mm above the table with a wide 36° diffused downward throw makes the plate the brightest surface in the room.
- 022700 K, CRI 90 makes food appear appetising — cool temperatures make meat look grey.
- 03Ambient light in the surrounding room should be lower than the table pool — the contrast ratio does the work.
Common mistakes
- ×Hanging the pendant too high — it becomes a bright object in the eye line instead of a light source.
- ×Using recessed downlights only — flat, cafeteria-like; no focus.
- ×Cool colour temperature over food — clinically unpleasant.
